Kasm Workspaces User Guide

If you are new to Kasm Workspaces, this guide walks you through the experience from your first login to everyday use.

Kasm Workspaces gives you secure access to desktops, applications, and browsers that run remotely instead of on your local computer. You connect through a web browser, while the workspace itself runs on Kasm infrastructure. This approach helps protect organizational resources because applications and data remain inside the managed environment rather than on your device.

What is a workspace?​

A workspace is a remote environment that can be one of the following:

  • A virtual Windows, macOS, or Linux desktop
  • A Windows, macOS, or Linux application
  • A browser with or without a preconfigured URL

You access the workspace through your web browser just as you would any other website.

When you open a workspace, Kasm Workspaces creates a session. A session is your active connection to that remote environment. You can use the session until you close it, stop it, or your administrator's policies end it.

Why use Kasm Workspaces?​

Kasm Workspaces is designed to make secure access simple.

Instead of installing applications or moving sensitive files to your computer, you work inside an isolated remote environment that is streamed to your browser. This allows you to:

  • Access work from almost any modern device
  • Keep sensitive work inside a managed environment
  • Switch between devices without recreating your workspace
  • Use approved cloud storage and supported peripherals when allowed by your administrator

Most user workflows only require a modern web browser to get started. Only a few features like smart card pass-through require installing additional software on your computer.

Who should read this guide?​

This guide is for people who use Kasm Workspaces that has already been configured by an administrator.

Use this guide if you want to learn how to:

  • Launch your first workspace
  • Resume or stop running sessions
  • Use the workspace control panel
  • Update your personal account settings
  • Connect approved cloud storage
  • Install the Progressive Web App (PWA)
  • Use supported devices such as microphones, cameras, and smart cards

How you will use Kasm Workspaces​

Most users follow the same workflow.

  1. Sign in to Kasm Workspaces.
  2. Choose a workspace from the launcher.
  3. Start a new session.
  4. Work inside the browser.
  5. Use the control panel to adjust session settings when needed.
  6. Manage your personal preferences from your user profile.

As your needs grow, you can connect approved cloud storage, install the Progressive Web App, and customize your experience.

Everything you need, in order​

The pages in this section build on one another. If this is your first time using Kasm Workspaces, begin with the launcher.

  • Workspaces Launcher: Browse available workspaces, launch new sessions, resume existing sessions, and stop sessions when you are finished.
  • Control Panel: Manage your active session, adjust streaming settings, transfer files, configure audio, and access additional session controls.
  • User Profile: Update your account settings, manage SSH keys, review session history, and connect approved cloud storage providers.
  • Progressive Web App (PWA): Install Kasm Workspaces as an app on desktop or mobile devices for a more integrated experience.
  • Translations: Change the display language and understand how language preferences are selected.
  • Peripheral Support: Learn which devices, including cameras, microphones, smart cards, and other peripherals, are supported.

Connect your files​

Your organization may allow you to connect cloud storage to your account.

Supported providers include:

  • Google Drive
  • Microsoft OneDrive
  • Dropbox
  • Nextcloud
  • AWS S3

These connections are configured from your User Profile. Once connected, approved storage becomes available inside your workspace according to your organization's security policies.

Understanding the user experience​

Three parts of Kasm Workspaces work together.

  • The Launcher helps you find and start workspaces.
  • The Control Panel lets you manage an active session.
  • Your User Profile stores your personal preferences and available integrations.

After you sign in, you launch a workspace from the launcher. The workspace runs remotely while your browser displays the session. Throughout the session, you can use the control panel to adjust settings and interact with supported features. Your profile keeps your personal settings available each time you sign in.

Because the workspace runs remotely, you can continue working from different devices without relying on locally installed applications or storing sensitive work on your endpoint.
